Guwahati Zoo is located in Assam state of India. It is one of the largest Zoo of North East region, it spreads in land area of 432 acres. It is also known as Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden. This zoo was planned in Indian National Congress’s 64 session, which was held in the year 1957. The zoo was officially open in 1958 for visitors. At the inception of the Zoo, animal were few in numbers. In 1958 only 278 animals of 53 species were present in the Zoo. Nowadays the number of animals are 895 of 113 species.
A museum and a Botanical garden were added in this Zoo in 1982, therefore it is called as Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden. 45 hectare area of added in this Zoo in the year 2002 and total land area of the Zoo will increase to 175 hectares. A snake house is also located inside the zoo. Varieties of Snakes are available inside the zoo. The zoo also houses different types of birds inside the Zoo.
List of Animals
The list of animals in the Assam State Zoo is very large and it includes some of the exotic animals of the world. The star attractions of Guwahati zoo include white rhinos, black rhinos, chimpanzees, one horn Indian rhinoceros, Asian Tiger, Asiatic lion, deers, bear, etc. Jaguar, puma and llama from South America; Zebras, Ostriches and Giraffes from Africa and kangaroos from Australia are one of the unique creatures of this zoo. This Zoo is functioning under Assam State Zoo Division to preserve indigenous and run breeding programs.

An entry ticket rates for Indian adult is 30 Rs, on the other hand, foreigners need to purchase entry tickets of 100 Rs. All types of cameras (Digital and Video) are allowed inside the zoo after paying the charges. Professional camera charges are on higher side. Battery operated vehicles are available inside the zoo for visitors. A separate ticket is required to avail the facility of battery car.

At least half the days (4 to 5 hours) are required to cover the entire Zoo because zoo spreads in large areas. It is a very good botanical park along with Zoo and museums.
