Madras Crocodile Bank is the crocodile breeding centre located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The official name of this reptile bank is Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology. It is also known as Crocodile Park Chennai. It is crocodile breeding and research centre where they tried to conserve this beautiful specie of reptiles. It is a recognized reptile zoo and it was the first crocodile breeding centre of Asia at that time. It is a Non Governmental Organization. Madras Crocodile Bank History

This reptile Zoo was set up on 26 August 1976 by Romulus Whitaker and his wife to prevent the endangered species of crocodiles from extinction. It was established to prevent three endangered species of crocodiles, they are the gharial, mugger and the saltwater crocodile. Later in 1981 they started a breeding program for freshwater turtles and tortoises. The bank saw a huge success, it was started with just 30 muggers and at the end of in the period of 14 years the count of crocodiles increased to 8000.

Crocodile Park Chennai Timings

Madras Crocodile Bank timings are 8.30 AM to 5.30 PM from Tuesday to Sunday. Opening time of Crocodile park is 8.30 in the morning and it closes at 5.30 in the evening. Monday is the weekly off and visitors are not permissible inside the Crocodile bank. Crocodile Bank Night Safari timing is 7 PM to 8.30 PM from Tuesday to Saturday. Night Safari remains closed on every Sunday and Monday.

Madras Crocodile Bank Entry Fee

The crocodile Zoo entry fee is affordable to the pocket. The crocodile Zoo ticket price is 50 Rs for adult and 30 Rs for children below 10 years. Night Safari ticket charges are 200 Rs for adult and 100 Rs for child below 15 years of age. Night Safari tickets are available only by making advance reservations and on spot tickets for the same are not available. For advance booking of night safari an E mail must be sent to info@madrascrocodilebank.org.

Photography is allowed inside the Crocodile Bank. Cameras are allowed inside the Crocodile zoo of Chennai by paying camera admission charges. Digital Still Camera ticket prices are 30 Rs and Video Camera fee is 100 Rs. So visitors can click the high quality pictures of crocodiles by paying a small charges.

Activities at Crocodile Bank

Multiple activities are performed at the crocodile zoo to educate and for the entertainment of the visitors. The snake venom extract session is quite popular among the visitors of the zoo. Every Sunday visitors can witness the part of feeding program of the Zoo. At 4.30 PM on every Sunday, Zoo officials feed the largest crocodile of India in captivity. The name of the crocodile is Jaws III. It is living in alone in an enclosure due to his destructive strength and power. Crocodile Park Chennai feeding timings are 11.30 AM, 12.30 PM and 5 PM on every Sunday.

In Night Safari guests who made an advance reservation led by a trained guide. The Zoo authorities provide torches to the visitors of the Zoo and visitors can witness the crocodile’s life in the night.

Madras Crocodile Zoo Location and How to Reach


It is located 40 KM away from the Chennai city and 15 KM away from Mamallapuram city. If you are coming from Mahabalipuram via public transport, Bus no 599 is the best option. The ticket cost is just 15 Rs and time taken by bus is around 40 minutes. Distance from Chennai is around 40 KM and one way ride to Crocodile Zoo will take at least 75 minutes due to traffic on Chennai. The place is well connected to various modes of public transport. Bus is the cheapest way to reach here and Auto Rickshaws and cabs charges are very high compared to Bus.

Best Time to Visit Chennai Crocodile Park

Everyday is the best day to visit this magnificent zoo, however Sunday is the best day to visit the zoo due to multiple activities performed in the Zoo on Sunday. On Sunday visitors can see the feeding program of Crocodiles, especially Jaws 3. Chennai is one of the most hot place of India. If you are planning to visit this place in summers, make sure to visit this place during morning hours. Winter season is the best season to visit this place. A visit of two to three hours is sufficient to see this wonderful and unique zoo.
