Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park is located in Katraj region of city, the park is also known as Katraj Zoo, Pune Zoo and Rajiv Gandhi Zoo. Zoo is spread over a decent area, 130 acres. Management of Katraj Zoo and Katraj snake park Pune is done by Pune Municipal Corporation. Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research Centre Pune, Maharashtra is constructed into three parts. It has zoo, snake park, and animal orphanage and people can also adopt animal if they like. The zoo campus includes a wide lake spread over 42 acres, known as Katraj Lake, Pune.

Pune Zoo had been established in 1999 and gates were opened for public on 14 March 1999. Earlier Pune city had a zoological park in centre of the city and its name was Peshwe Zoo. However, later a new zoo was constructed in Katraj region and initially it had reptiles and few other animals. After further development of the Katraj zoological park, all the animals were shifted from Pehswa Udyan Zoo. Katraj Snake Park Lake is part of the new developed zoo which was not present earlier.

Katraj Zoo Timings 2024

Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park Pune timings are different throughout the year. There are two different timings for zoo opening and closing depending over the months of the year. Katraj Snake Park Timing is no different than zoo, and it also follows the same visiting hours. During 1st April to 15th June, Pune Zoo timing is 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. This is the timings for which entry ticket counters are open, zoo gates remains open till 6:30 PM. For remaining time of the year, Katraj Zoo Timings is 9:30 AM to 5 PM. This is again the timing when entry tickets are sold and the zoo is kept open till 6 PM. Many battery operated vehicles also operates inside the zoo premises.

Zoo remains closed every Wednesday of the week, so it is better to plan accordingly. Zoo visiting duration is 2-3 hours and complete zoo can be covered by walk. The battery operated vehicles are also present inside the zoo, this service is available after every 15 minutes. These buses take 30 mins to 1 hour of time to cover entire zoo, however they sometimes skip the snake park and bird section of Pune zoological park. Best timing to visit Katraj zoo is early hours and during evening hours. Weather is pleasant during these hours of the day, due to which animal doesn’t hide in shades and people gets a good view.

Katraj Zoo Entry Fee 2024

Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park entry fee is different for children and adults. Entry ticket for adults is 40 Rs and for kids it is 10 Rs. The person above the height of 4 feet and 4 inch is considered an adult. Blind and handicapped people are allowed free entry. Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park Pune ticket price is Rs 100 for foreign nationals. For private school students (accompanied by a teacher), the ticket price is 10 Rs. If the students belong to a Government school, PMC and ZP, the Pune Zoo entry fee is kept as low as 5 Rs per person. The snake park entry fee is also included in this ticket. No separate charges are there for lake or bird enclosures.

Camera can also be taken inside zoo premises, by paying 50 Rs as still camera entry fee. Video camera is also allowed inside Pune zoo, and it has 200 Rs as entry fee. Katraj zoo images are very lovely due to the greenery inside the park. One can also click pictures inside snake park. However, follow all the safety rules while taking photos and making videos of animals, reptiles and birds. If someone wants to opt for guide, they can rent a guide at 50 Rs per group. Battery operated vehicles ticket charges are 25 Rs for children below 4 Feet 4 Inch of height. Adults can book these battery operated buses for zoo ride by paying 40 Rs. Water bottle can also be taken inside the zoo campus, by paying 10 Rs as refundable deposit. This is a good initiative by zoo authority, to ensure that people do not throw the plastic bottle inside. Parking charges is quite nominal, 5 Rs for two wheeler and car parking cost is also not much.

The entrance and exit gates are also listed with their respective legends. Pune Zoo How to Reach and Location

Location of zoological park is not far away from Pune Junction Railway station. It is at a distance of 10 Km from station. Distance of Pune airport from Zoo is 20 Km. Public transport can also be used; personal car, buses and taxis are some of the options available. Car will take 35-40 min for travelling to zoo from railway station. If someone opts for public transport buses, Katraj Dudh Dairy / Sarpo Udyan is the nearest bus stand. It is at a walking distance of 150 mtr from zoo, takes 2 minutes of walk. The bus routes for zoo are 103, 42, 301 for people coming from Swarget Bus stand. If one is travelling from Shivaji Nagar bus stand, Bus route number 2 can be chosen. Bus route no 24 is for the people travelling from Pune Bus stand.

The zoological park is very famous among the visitors, and it experiences heavy crowd during weekends. Pune zoo reviews are good and it is a picnic spot for families and children. Many couples can also be seen inside the campus as the surroundings provides a pleasant experience when the weather is good. If kids or elders are visiting here, it is advisable to use battery operated mini buses. Covering the zoo by walk can be really tiring for them as it is very big. This is only animal zoo in Pune city and it has many exotic birds, animals and reptiles. The main attraction here is white tiger, Bengal tiger, leopards, snake park etc. Many enclosures are empty and a large area inside zoo is still not operational. Outside food and water is allowed inside the premises and it has canteen also. There are all the basic facilities for visitors such as drinking water, sitting area, toilets etc. These facilities are provided at regular intervals so as to ensure people have a pleasant visit here.

Strict rules are followed by management to keep it very clean and well maintained. Usage of plastic is banned inside the park and eatables can be taken inside paper or cloth bags. Various rules are laid down by authorities here and they must be followed by all. Following the rules ensure safety of animals and visitors. Teasing the animals, feeding them or any other kind of disturbance can lead to a fine of 2000 Rs. Pets are not allowed and neither any tobacco or alcohol product.
