List of Chief Ministers of West Bengal

Mamta Banerjee of All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) is the current Chief Minister of West Bengal. First government was formed on 15th August 1947 and Prafulla Chandra Ghosh of Indian National Congress was appointed as the first Chief Minister of West Bengal. Bidhan Chandra Roy of INC was the second chief minister of West Bengal and he ruled Bengal as CM for 13 years. Till 26 January 1950, Chief Minister was called as Premier.

Prafulla Chandra Sen of Indian National Congress was the third chief minister of Bengal and he completed his tenure of 5 years. Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee was the fourth CM of W Bengal from Bangla Congress and managed to remain in power for a mere 7 month. Dr. Prafulla Chandra Ghosh was the fifth CM and remained in power for 3 months and some odd days (Around 100 days). Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee (Bangla Congress Party) again took the oath as sixth chief minister of Bengal and managed to remain in power for a short duration of 1 year and 22 days. Then Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee from INC was elected as seventh Chief Minister of West Bengal and remained in power for less than 3 months. In 1972 West Bengal voters elected Siddhartha Shankar Ray (INC) as eight CM of West Bengal and he was able to complete the term of 5 years. After a long time Western Bengal people witnessed a Chief Minister who has completed his term.

Communist Party of India (CPI (M)) Era

In 1977 Jyoti Basu of Communist Party of India (CPI (M)) was elected as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal and he remained in the power for more than 23 years; this is the longest duration for any chief minister of West Bengal. Buddhadeb Bhattacharya of Communist Party of India (Marxist) was elected as tenth chief minister of India and he managed to remain in the power for more than 10 Years. CPI (M) ruled the politics of West Bengal for 34 years and became the only political party of India who remained in the power for such a long tenure.

Mamta Banerjee Era

In 2011 Manja Banerjee of All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) defeated the Left party by a good Margin and became the eleventh chief minister of West Bengal. Mamta Banerjee is the first woman Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Leading Opinion polls are predicting that Mamta Banerjee is going to win the 2016 Assembly Elections also.
